We’ve been writing about curly hair care on our blog for quite some time. Because beautiful curls are not just about the right hair products — they’re also about how you treat them.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re just looking for tips on how to care for curly hair or already have your own routine. Read on and see if you might be making any of these mistakes.
Mistake #1 – I Don’t Know My Curls
Every curl is different. Unique. That’s the ultimate rule to understand from the very beginning.
If something works for your friend with 3A curls, your 2B waves won’t necessarily react the same way. However, there are certain similarities that make it easier to choose the right products for cleansing, nourishing, and styling — and to decide how to approach your routine.
It also matters how lifted your hair cuticles are from the hair shaft. We’re talking about hair porosity. Porosity significantly affects how well your hair absorbs moisture and nutrients — and how long it can retain them.
OUR TIP: Not sure what your hair type is? Compare the differences and find out which curl type fits you best in our blog article. You can also learn whether your hair is low, medium, or high porosity — and what that means for you.
Mistake #2 – I’m Afraid to Experiment
There is no single universal routine for curly hair care — mainly because of what we mentioned above.
The foundation of a successful hair routine is experimenting. Today, brands offer a wide range of products designed specifically for curly hair. You just have to search, test, and combine.
Finding your perfect product combination is not a one-week project. Plus, hair responds to many influences — environment, pregnancy, hormonal changes, water quality, climate, and more.
It’s very possible that a product works perfectly for you at home, but after arriving on vacation closer to the equator, your hair behaves completely differently.
Mistake #3 – I Stick to One Method No Matter What
The curly world recently experienced a revolution called the Curly Girl Method (CGM). Although it has been modified over time, many of its core principles have helped millions of curly women and men achieve healthier and more beautiful hair.
But even CGM has its limitations — and it may not suit you in its original form. That’s completely okay. If your curls benefit from a modified version or only certain techniques from a method, follow what works for you.
Mistake #4 – I Don’t Understand Hair Product Ingredients
If it has been enough for you that a shampoo says “for curly hair” on the label, this might shake your trust a little.
Not all products with that label contain quality ingredients. For example:
Sulfates can overly dry your hair (they’re only recommended occasionally for removing buildup).
Parabens strip moisture and increase frizz.
Waxes are not water-soluble and are difficult to wash out.
Non-soluble silicones create buildup.
Minerals can harm your scalp.
Always look for products with cleaner, more natural formulations free from these ingredients. If you’re unsure about an ingredient, learn how to read labels properly in our detailed guide.
Mistake #5 – I Forget That Curls Need Moisture
Hydration is essential for textured hair — wavy, curly, and afro.
First, you need to provide moisture. That means conditioner is non-negotiable. A rinse-out conditioner should be part of every wash day, whether you use co-wash or a gentle shampoo.
For extra hydration (especially for high-porosity or color-treated hair), use a leave-in conditioner.
Second, once you’ve hydrated your hair, you must seal that moisture in. This is where styling products come in.
OUR TIP: Confused about conditioners? Our complete conditioner guide will help. And remember — too much hydration can also be a problem. Sometimes your hair needs protein instead of more moisture.
Mistake #6 – I Use Techniques That Damage My Hair
For example, drying your hair with a rough terry towel can dry it out and ruin curl definition. Brushing dry hair also causes frizz.
Many beneficial techniques are part of CGM or its variations — like applying conditioner using the praying hands method or drying hair using plopping (with an old cotton T-shirt).
There are also layering methods like LOC (Leave-in, Oil, Cream), where products are applied in a specific order to lock in moisture without disturbing curl definition.
Mistake #7 – I Don’t Use Refresh and I Forget Deep Cleansing
Washing curls too often is harmful — and time-consuming.
A great alternative is refreshing. A simple method is combining water with leave-in conditioner and sealing it with a styling product. It restores volume and definition without a full wash.
However, from time to time, don’t forget clarifying — deep cleansing. Even with careful care, buildup forms. Clarifying removes impurities and is often the solution when your hair feels dull and nothing seems to work anymore.
Mistake #8 – I Ruin Curl Definition with the Wrong Hairstyle or Hair Tie
Textured hair requires more effort than straight hair. Achieving defined curls takes work.
That’s why many curly people resort to quick hairstyles that hold hair in place for work or sports. But tying your hair tightly with a regular elastic is not ideal.
Better options include loose braids or the popular pineapple hairstyle. Ideally, secure them with a satin scrunchie. Satin is gentler on hair and scrunchies come in stylish colors that complement your look.
Mistake #9 – I Damage My Hair While Sleeping and Expose It to Harsh Conditions
You need to care for your curls even while sleeping.
Cotton or flannel pillowcases create friction and cause frizz. Try silk or satin pillowcases, or protect your hair with a loose high bun or protective styles.
Hair quality is also affected by environmental conditions you may not immediately consider:
Excessive heat (like long days at the beach)
Very dry indoor air (especially during heating season)
Chlorine in pools
Saltwater
Aggressive hot blow-drying
There are ways to protect your hair in different seasons — from protective hairstyles to satin accessories like turbans.
Curly hair care may seem demanding at first. But with patience and dedication while you find your ideal routine, the reward is worth it.
A beautiful cascade of healthy curls or waves is something you deserve.
At Kučeravé, you’ll find everything you need to make it easier.
